9.04.04 I am not by nature a journal or diary keeper, and by extension I am not really the blogging sort. But I thought it might be fun and useful (for myself and those who are interested in the film) if I kept something like a weekly blog about the progress of the film and the process of trying to get it into festivals and secure distribution. This will also serve as a place to ruminate about the ideas of the film and how they are reflected and amplified by current events in the nation and the world.

For the moment though, I will focus on the state of the film.

I am finishing up the revision of the website, including a new trailer, and preparing for the very first viewing for the film tomorrow. If all goes well, six or so people will gather to watch the film for the first time. I have also sent some DVDs of the film to a few folks around the country. My plan has been to find a nice balance between people who know me and my work, particularly the film, and those who aren't familiar with my work. Hopefully this mix of viewers will be able to give me constructive feedback. Not that I've allowed myself much time to make major revisions before I have to submit it to the first festival. The plan is to send the finished film on DVD to the Sundance, Slam Dance, and Portland Festivals by the 13th of September and no later than the 20th. Of course if everyone pans the film, I'm in big trouble.

My only real concern is how people will react to the length of the film. It runs 2 hours and 40 minutes right now. Some will find that excessive. I on the other hand, like long movies, as long as they have something interesting to say. And I do think this film has a few interesting things to say. Maybe too many.

The biggest thing I am grappling with right now is the fact that the creative process for the film, which I have been immersed into to one degree or anther for the last two years, will be coming to a close very soon. As soon as it is in the mail to the festivals. Then real work begins. Then it's all about trying to sell the film and secure distribution. So if anyone knows a producer's rep who might like the film, let me know.

Anyway, that's it for the first blog. Hopefully they will get better from here.
