It
seems that Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett have teamed up to create a
new reality TV show about filmmakers called On
The Lot. The show will take 16 filmmakers and have them create one
short film each week. Naturally, one filmmaker gets cut each week and the
last director standing gets a million dollar production deal. So, it seemed
like a good idea to submit something for consideration. I spent a couple
of weeks trying to edit a five minute trailer for DSR, which was not nearly
as easy as I thought it would be. With only one minute all you can really
do is give a flavor of the film, but with five minutes I needed to try and
tell the story of the film in an extremely condensed form. Did one edit
and thankfully showed it to my wife who convinced me that it didn't make
sense to anyone who hadn't already seen the film. So, I spent another week
trying to create a new version. I think the final product is pretty good.
I think it will hold up fairly well in comparison to the other films that
are being posted on the show's website. There are a bunch a really interesting
films being posted, and some decidedly not so interesting films. The nice
thing is that anyone who registers can comment once on each film. I've been
holding off on commenting because I didn't think it was fair to critique
someone's film until I have a film posted that others can critique. It will
be interesting to see what people make of the trailer. It will also be interesting
to see whether the trailer presents me as a filmmaker worthy of being considered
for the show. I think I would be more anxious or excited about it if I hadn't
just finished the final edit on the kids scifi novel I've been writing for
the past two years. So far, everyone who's read it has had good things to
say. Hopefully one of the agents I've been contacting will feel the same
way. |
